Melody Road

Located in Hokkaido, Wakayama and Gunma in Japan, it's a stretch of pavement
that plays music when you drive over it.

The pavements are cut into patterns designed to play a series of notes when
car goes by. The optimum speed for the music is 28 mph.

There used to be one in Lancaster, California where you can drive over it at
50 mph. It was built by Honda, but was paved over few weeks ago due to
safety concerns (accidents so far: NONE).

Here's the Japanese one:

And for memories, here's the Lancaster, California one:

I read that drivers complained about the noise when they drove over the road. Apparently, Honda built the road specifically for the wheelbase and tire size of its then-new Civic. Hence, other cars driving over the road got an out of tune version.

I wonder how this works. in israel there are places where you get an annoying noise when riding on the shoulder of the road, to avoid late night accidents. but I never heard a melodic one :)

How awesome would this be for Nashville, TN? Hollywood has their Walk of Fame... in Nashville, famous songwriters get their own section of street which would play their most famous song. That would be awesome, right? This could work in New Orleans, Chicago... How about show tunes on Broadway?
